WellCited vs SEO rank trackers

A rank tracker reports where you place. An answer engine has no places — it has a sentence with two or three names in it.

Do rank trackers measure AI visibility?

No, and the good ones do not claim to. A rank tracker answers a question about a results page: for this keyword, in this location, on this device, what position does your URL hold. An answer engine does not produce a results page, so the question has no answer there.

Ranked is not recommended. A page can hold position one for a query and go unnamed in an assistant's answer to the same question, because the two systems are scoring different things — one is ordering documents, the other is assembling a claim and deciding what it can attribute.

What each one actually measures

Side by side, on the axes that decide which number you need:

  • A rank tracker measures position, for a keyword, on a results page — per location, per device, usually daily.
  • Answer tracking measures whether your name appears in a generated answer to a question a person would type in full, and which companies appear instead of you.
  • Rank has a long tail: position eleven is a page you can climb from. An answer has two or three slots and no position four.
  • A rank improves gradually. A mention is binary in any single answer and only becomes a rate across repeated runs, which is why it has to be sampled rather than checked.

Does classic SEO still help?

Substantially, and more than most of this category admits. Crawlability, server-rendered text, structured data and a declared sitemap are shared ground: four of the seven checks in our audit are things a good SEO team has already done, and if yours has, the audit will say so and score you accordingly.

What is not shared is the shape of the page and the shape of the win. Answer-shaped content — a question heading with the complete answer in the first sentence under it — is rewarded by an extraction step that has no equivalent in classic ranking. And the click may never happen at all, so the metric a rank tracker exists to move is not the metric that is moving.

Should you keep the rank tracker?

Yes, if organic search still sends you customers — and for most businesses reading this, it does. These are two instruments pointed at two channels, and dropping the one that measures the channel currently paying your bills in order to watch the newer one is a bad trade.

The honest sequence is to keep the rank tracker, run the free audit once to find out whether an engine can read you at all, and only add answer tracking when the answer to that is yes.
