Share of voice (AI answers)
The share of AI answers to a fixed question set in which your company is named, measured against the companies named instead.
Updated
Share of voice is the proportion of answers to a fixed set of questions in which your company is named, read against the companies named in the rest.
It is a ratio and not a count, and the denominator is what makes it useful. A mention rate of forty per cent means nothing on its own; it means something once you know that one competitor sits at seventy and three others sit at ten.
What has to stay fixed for the number to mean anything?
Three things, held still between runs:
- The prompts. Reword a question between months and the movement you are reading is your own edit, not the market's.
- The engines. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini disagree with each other far more than any of them disagrees with itself, so a blended number that changes its blend is not a series.
- The cadence. Answers vary between identical runs, so a rate needs the same number of samples each period to be comparable at all.
